Habitat for Humanity of Washington County Facts
• Builds houses in partnership with low income families who are 30-50% of median income for community.
• Is close to being the largest home builder in the U.S.
• Requires families to put in 300 hours of "sweat equity" helping to build someone else's house and their own.
• SELLS the house to the family. It is NOT A GIVE AWAY PROGRAM.
• Habitat is the mortgage lender. Families have a zero percent mortgage. Terms average about 20 years. Monthly payments do not exceed 20-25% of the family's gross income.
• Builds houses with financial and in-kind donations of labor and materials. Government funds are only used for infrastructure such as sewer and water lines from main to the house and lot purchase.
• Was 30 years old in 2006. The founders are Millard and Linda Fuller.
• Is a 501(c)(3) tax exempt organization, meaning that your contributions are tax-deductible.
• Does not pay sales tax thanks to a special act of the state legislature (Act 516-1995) initiated by Fayetteville (all AR affiliates banding together in this effort). Our area Senators David Malone and the late Fay Boozman presented the act to the legislature and can be thanked for their efforts toward its passage.
